Give Me 30 Minutes To Improve Your Poor Memory!

So many people claim to be the proud owner of a poor memory these days, it appears to be almost an illness!

Why is that ? - Is it because of the hectic pace of modern life, which demands that we juggle numerous activities at the same time ? Or is it because we didn't really focus on these matters in the first place ?

Maybe our minds are jumping from subject to subject, activity to activity and nothing ever captures our imaginations and registers fully with our memory.

Whatever the reason, the techniques on these pages will enable you to significantly improve your memory beyond recognition - if you want to !

But please don't take my word for it - see for yourself that a good memory is achievable if you try.

You will astonish yourself and your friends as you remember lists of un-related words and objects.

The Background of Memory Systems

It was the Greeks who discovered that we remember by association i.e. we link things together. This enables us to remember for example, the colour and taste of apples, and how different apples are to oranges or bananas.

They also found that when creating mental images as a memory aid, that these images had to be exaggerated, humorous, and in some sort of sequence.

Throughout history many people have proved to have an astounding ability to memorise names and facts e.g.

Professor A.Aitkin who was the Professor of Mathematics at Edinburgh University, Scotland, could remember the first thousand decimal places of Pi.

Themistocles could remember the names of the 20,000 people of Athens.

A nineteenth century linguist, Cardinal Mezzofanti, memorised the vocabulary of 70 to 80 languages.

Antonio de Marco Magliabechi memorised the complete library of the Grand Duke of Tuscany.

Lucius Scipio could remember the names of all the citizens of Rome.

Seneca was able to memorise and repeat two thousand words.

Before we start our memory improvement programme I want you to imprint these words in your mind : -

There Are No Bad Memories, Only Untrained Memories

In our first memory system we will use imagination, humour, exaggeration and colour.

Let's have a little memory test first of all - give yourself about a minute to look at the following list just ONCE.

Car, ashtray, bed, bottle, typewriter, shoe, television set, brick, paper, chair, telephone, cigarettes, nails, carpet, plate.

Now try to write them down in the correct sequence without looking back at the list.

If you omit a word it will mean that all the remaining words are incorrect, as they will be out of order.

How did you manage with this memory test ?

Some people will score well while others cannot remember an assorted list of unrelated items without help.

Our First Memory System

So let's start with our first memory system - we are going to link one object to the next, always linking the previous object to the present object.

We start by getting a picture of the first object in your mind. We all know what a car looks like, so just image it.
You must SEE this car, for a second, in your "mind's eye".

Then the next object is an ashtray.

Here you take a most important step towards training your memory. You must associate or link car to, or with, ashtray.

This association MUST be ridiculous and exaggerated.

You could, for example, see yourself driving around your neighbourhood in a LARGE ashtray!

DON'T make logical associations, as you WILL NOT remember a logical association. Your images MUST always be ridiculous or illogical.

You MUST actually see this ridiculous image in your mind for a second.

Go onto the next object as soon as you have seen the picture in your mind.

The object you now know is ashtray so, therefore, the next step is to associate or link ashtray to the next object in the list, which is bed. Pay no more attention to car.

You need to make a completely new ridiculous/illogical mental image between bed and ashtray. You might see yourself asleep in a giant ashtray instead of a bed for example. Choose a mental image, which YOU think is most ridiculous and actually SEE it in your mind.

I cannot stress this feature of the memory system too much.

However, don't think about the mental images too long - often the first really ridiculous picture is the best one to use.

You now have to link bottle with bed - again it must be an illogical/ridiculous association. You might be lying inside a LARGE bottle instead of a bed or drinking from a bed instead of a bottle. See whichever image is right for you and then stop thinking about it.

Next we have typewriter which you should link to bottle. Here you might see a large typewriter where all the keys are bottles and as you type, your fingers push through the foil tops. See it in your mind - ridiculous/illogical.

Shoe is your next object and you must link shoe to typewriter. You might see yourself wearing typewriters on your feet instead of shoes. See it in your mind.

Link television set to shoe by seeing yourself watching programmes on a large shoe instead of a television set. See it in your mind.

Link brick to television set by seeing your house walls made of television sets instead of bricks . See it in your mind.

Link paper to brick by seeing yourself reading a newspaper made up of bricks instead of paper. See it in your mind.

Link chair to paper by seeing yourself trying to sit down on a chair made of paper and falling through onto the floor. See it in your mind.

Link telephone to chair by seeing yourself holding a chair to your ear instead of a telephone. See the image in your mind.

Link cigarettes to telephone by seeing yourself with a telephone with thousands of cigarettes sticking out of the mouthpiece. See it in your mind.

Link nails to cigarettes by seeing yourself smoking nails or trying to hammer lighted cigarettes into a piece of wood. See it in your mind.

Link carpet to nails by seeing yourself walking across a carpet made of nails. Actually see it in your mind.

Link carpet to plate by seeing yourself putting small carpets away in your cupboards instead of plates, or food on carpets instead of plates, on your table. See it in your mind.

If you have seen these images in your mind then you will remember the fifteen objects without difficulty. From car to plate you should remember them in order.

It obviously takes longer to explain the process than to do it, as the formation of each suitable ridiculous/illogical image should only take a second.

So let's see if you remember the list of objects.

Bring car into your mind and what do you remember - ashtray! Yes - you saw yourself driving an ashtray instead of a car. Ashtray reminds you of bed because you were asleep in an ashtray, bed reminds you of bottle because you were lying inside a large bottle, bottle reminds you of typewriter, typewriter reminds you of shoe, shoe reminds you of television set, television set reminds you of brick, brick reminds you of paper etc.

Try the rest yourself. You will be able to remember all the objects on the list in the correct sequence.

Now Memorise Your Own List

Now you have proved to yourself how easy it is to remember a list of objects you can now make up your own list, and memorise them in the same manner as you memorised the list above. You must remember to make your mental images as ridiculous and illogical as you can.

Exaggerate as much as possible - see the objects out of proportion and in action if possible. Also substitute where possible i.e. picture one object instead of another as you did whilst picturing yourself driving an ashtray instead of a car.

As you experiment with this memory system you will soon become very adept at instantly bringing a ridiculous association to mind which will enable you to link objects. You can use this new skill immediately to memorise shopping lists or any other type of listing.

Show off to your friends - practice makes perfect. If you don't remember an association it's because you didn't use a ridiculous association or you didn't see it in your mind.

You can impress yourself or your friends by being able to remember all the objects two hours later or days later! You will still be able to recall your original associations, and you will also be able to recall the list backwards!

One of the effects of using such a memory system is that your " natural " memory becomes much stronger too!

By now you will have realised that you have improved your poor memory a good deal.

BUT you can improve much more!
