How To Stop Smoking Now!
So you want to stop smoking? Or do you?
Many people have been exactly where you are now, wishing there was a magic potion which would take away
the craving for a cigarette. Panic stricken in case they didn't have enough cigarettes to last
through the night.
Unable to pay attention and focus at :-
office meetings
seminars
or interviews because of the need for nicotine
times when they could only think of the next cigarette.... |
Some people try to stop smoking because of pressure from their families BUT always remember that
stopping smoking is something you have to do by yourself for yourself.
Why should you stop smoking ?
Because you will feel better, you could add years to your life but most importantly, you will be
FREE from being a slave to a horrible addiction, a rediculous and selfish habit.
One that ruins your health, costs you a fortune, and makes you smell like an ashtray to everyone around you.
Do you know how toxic tobacco smoke is?
Do you know that it contains more than 4000 toxic chemicals including :-
Arsenic
Acetone
Carbon Monoxide
Formaldehyde
Hydrogen Cyanide |
Things to remember and think about...
Remember your family who love you and count on you
Remember when you had self respect
Remember other challenges you've had and been successful
Remember you'll look better, you'll feel better, and you'll raise your self esteem.
You know you should stop smoking.
Stop Smoking ( And Give Yourself A Pay Rise!)
So you have resolved that you're going to stop smoking for good this time.
Good.
You'll have noticed that I do not refer to you "giving up" smoking. That phrase immediately
gives the idea of being a martyr, of depriving yourself of a comfort and that's not TRUE!
You're giving yourself the BEST present ever - it's all your Birthdays rolled into one!
Once you realise that life is so much better without cigarettes (and what a moment that is!
)and you're not being deprived or badly treated, the freedom is exhilarating!
The best day of your life may well be the day you stopped smoking!
You won't need to light up :-
after a meal
or with a coffee
or with a glass of beer or wine
or when you're on the telephone
or all the other times you've conditioned yourself to reach for a cigarette. |
What would it be worth not to feel frustrated and desperate to smoke when at the cinema or the theatre?
How proud of yourself you'll be..
Believe me - When you stop smoking - The mental freedom is staggering!
I know - I've done it!
Remember Your First Cigarette?
Think back to your first cigarette :-
Why did you start?
What caused you to put that thing in your mouth and light it?
Did you cough and splutter? We all did but we still persisted!
Did you want to appear older?
Did you want to appear sophisticated?
Or was there some other reason?
Think back again - Do you think it worked?
And how do you feel now?
Do you still want to appear older? or sophisticated?
I bet you don't!
In other words - is your reason for lighting that first cigarette still valid?
I suspect not....
I think we continue to smoke long after smoking has served whatever original purpose it had because we
don't know how to stop smoking.
We become addicted to nicotine (although I believe you can break that connection quite quickly)
and condition ourselves to automatically smoke whenever a particular situation arises.
Which ones apply to you (be honest!) :-
coffee break time (cigarette)
lunch time (cigarette)
telephone call (cigarette)
starting a new task (cigarette)
just finishing a task (cigarette)
and any number of other instances when your conditioned reflex just kicks in
. |
It's not as if you enjoy every cigarette you smoke is it? Some taste better than others,
while others you can't wait to finish.
And yet you continue with a furry mouth and bad
breath wishing for the magic pill or potion to help you stop.
Why? Because you are told about the terrible pangs
and craving you will have for nicotine once you stop.
It doesn't have to be like that...
Not once you realise that any pangs or discomfort are just the effect of your body returning to
normal.
And once it does - the relief is overwhelming!
Now - Hold on a minute!
You're probably thinking " OK, I've heard all this before. You're going to tell me that all I need is some will power and I'll stop smoking today. Well, I've tried it, and it isn't that easy!"
Guess what? You're right. Smokers and ex-smokers know it can be very difficult to stop.
It's true that some people find it more difficult to stop than others.
BUT the good news is that every day, people just like you stop smoking for ever...
Millions have done this - SO CAN YOU...
You Can If You Think You Can!
But you don't need magical aids to stop - YOU CAN DO IT....
How? You decide that you will NEVER smoke again and you stick to it..
Do you realise how close you are to beating this terrible addiction once and for all?
Do you want to always feel like a loser?
Do you want to feel the pride of being a non-smoker?
Do you want the praise of your loving family and friends?
Here's your action plan :
Decide when you are going to stop - fix a date maybe four to five weeks ahead.
Change your cigarette brand to one of a lower tar. Remember you don't need to "enjoy" the new
brand!
Four weeks before your "cut off" date choose one of your regular smoking times
and delay smoking your cigarette by ten to fifteen minutes e.g.you might choose to delay smoking
after breakfast.
Three weeks before your stop smoking date choose another time to delay smoking
your cigarette for ten to fifteen minutes e.g. at coffee breaks.
Two weeks before your stop smoking date choose another time to delay smoking your
cigarette for ten to fifteen minutes e.g. after lunch.
One week before your stop smoking date choose another time to delay smoking your
cigarette for ten to fifteen minutes e.g. when drinking alcohol.
By the time your stop date arrives you'll be delaying most if not all of your automatic reflex
smoking times.
Each day follow the meditation guide instructions to help you relax. See Self Improvement page and remind yourself why you want to stop smoking.
Stop smoking on the day you have chosen.
Remind yourself that you are doing yourself the largest favor possible and BE HAPPY.
Put an elastic band on your wrist. If you think of smoking, I want you to snap the band hard
against your wrist, then image a large traffic lights set on red, and repeat to yourself "STOP".
It is vitally important to distract yourself whenever smoking enters your mind.
If at all possible have a glass of cold water near you and sip it frequently.
Repeat little phrases to yourself e.g. I will feel better, I will be free.
Be extremely careful when in social situations where you would have smoked in the past.
Don't ever take for granted your hard earned freedom.
Remember - ONE CIGARETTE WILL UNDO ALL YOUR HARD WORK!
You may suffer withdrawal pangs from the lack of nicotine for up to three weeks but it isn't
as bad as toothache and you can easily distract yourself.
You will begin to feel as you used to before you started smoking.
Relax and enjoy the freedom I talked about earlier - you really will be overwhelmed!
Now's The Time To Stop Smoking...
The next part is up to you.
It's not too late to stop...
No one else can do it for you...
You have to make the decision to stop smoking...
It's decision time!
This is your chance to show your family how much you care for them
Imagine how you'll glow with pride when you announce you don't smoke any more!
Statistics reveal that if you don't act straight away, you are unlikely to act at all.
So quit now - throw those cigarettes away - You won't regret it..
So what do you do if you can't beat the smoking habit this time?
Whatever you do - DON'T stop trying to stop!
I have given you a way to stop which has worked for me and for others but it's up to YOU to succeed.....
Lifelong cigarette smokers are essentially drug addicts too, and like other drug addicts, they may also need help with drug addiction so they can quit.
